The book is a detailed account of the U.S. Mint's widely popular “America the Beautiful” National Park Quarters Program, which includes the five-ounce, three-inch diameter silver bullion coin, the regular-size non-circulating silver coin, the regular-size circulating copper nickel clad coin, and proof versions of the aforementioned.“America the Beautiful” quarters were originally devised as a logical follow up to the 50 State Quarter Program. Ganz provides an insider's account of the National Park Quarters Program's Congressional sponsorship, background on the National Park System, and the planchet design debates within the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee, including illustrations of the proposed and winning sketches.In addition to mintage figures, current prices and an historical examination of silver used for coinage, the 280-page book also has introductory remarks by former Mint director, Philip Diehl, and renowned numismatists, Donald Scarinci and Arthur Friedberg.A highly successful lawyer by profession, Ganz began writing about coins in 1965 as a correspondent for Numismatic News (Krause Publications) and has since published more than a dozen books on the subject. He served on the board of the American Numismatic Association from 1985 to 1995 and was its 48th president from 1993 to 1995. He is generally credited as the driving force behind the 50 State Quarters Program.
